Leheriya
A Rajasthani tie-dye that makes diagonal wave stripes, worn especially in the rainy season.
Also: lehariya, laharia, lehria
Leheriya comes from the Hindi word for wave. A length of cloth, often light cotton or silk, is rolled diagonally from one corner and tied at intervals with thread. It is then dyed, opened and the same process is repeated for further colours. The result is a pattern of slanting stripes in two or more colours. Leheriya is a speciality of Rajasthan, with Jaipur and Jodhpur as well known centres. The pattern is linked to the monsoon, and leheriya turbans and sarees are worn around Teej and Sawan. The related check pattern is called mothra.
