Htamein
The wrapped ankle-length skirt of Myanmar women, a cousin of the saree.
Also: htamain, hta mein, longyi
The htamein is the traditional skirt of women in Myanmar. It is a length of cloth, sewn into a tube or wrapped, that is worn round the waist and tucked or folded at the front or side. It goes with a fitted blouse called an eingyi. Silk htameins from Amarapura and elsewhere are woven in patterns, including the acheik wave design. The htamein belongs to the broad family of wrapped lower garments with the sarong, longyi and mekhela, and is not a saree.
