Extra weft
An added weft thread, often of zari or coloured silk, woven in only where the pattern calls for it, on top of the ground cloth.
Also: supplementary weft, extra weft weaving
The cloth has its own ground weft, which makes the main fabric. The extra weft is an additional thread, carried on its own shuttle or inserted by hand, that is woven into the surface only where a motif is needed. It lies over the ground threads, and between motifs it either floats across the back or is cut away. Jamdani, much Banarasi brocade and many borders are made this way. Extra weft gives motifs a raised, slightly embossed look, and it is the reason the pattern of a good handwoven saree can be felt with a finger. The term supplementary weft means the same.
