Dhoop chaon

A cloth woven with warp in one colour and weft in another, so the colour seems to shift with the light and the angle.

Also: dhoop chhaon, shot silk, shot colour

Dhoop chaon is Hindi for sun and shade. The cloth is woven with threads of one colour in the warp and a different colour in the weft, for example red and green, or pink and blue. Light travelling through the cloth mixes the two, and as the cloth moves or the viewer shifts, one colour then the other seems to dominate. This is also called shot silk. The effect is best on smooth silk, where the threads catch the light. It appears in many regional silks, and it is a notable feature of some south Indian and Banarasi weaves.
