Block print
A method of printing patterns on cloth with carved wooden blocks dipped in dye.
Also: block printing, hand block print, blockprint
In block printing a craftsman presses a hand-carved wooden block, wet with dye or a thickened colour, onto cloth. He repeats it row after row, lining each stamp with the last, and uses a separate block for each colour. The work needs a steady hand and a good eye. Rajasthan, in places such as Sanganer and Bagru, and Gujarat are well known for it. Block-printed cotton sarees are cool and light, and are worn every day. The craft can use natural dyes or synthetic ones. Hand-printed pieces show small differences between repeats, which is how they differ from machine prints.
