Antariya
The lower garment of early India, a cloth wrapped round the waist and legs, an ancestor of the saree.
Also: antariyam
Antariya is the name given to the lower wrapped cloth of ancient Indian dress, seen in sculpture and described in early texts. It was wrapped round the waist and legs, sometimes in a fishtail or drawn between the legs, and held by a girdle. It was worn with an upper cloth, the uttariya, and sometimes a breast band. Scholars see the three as part of the long history of the saree, though they do not agree on exactly how or when these garments joined into one cloth. The antariya is best thought of as a relative, not as the saree itself.
