Ajrakh

A block print of Sindh and Kutch in indigo and madder red, printed on both sides of the cloth.

Block print: a carved wooden block is dipped in dye and stamped again and again.

Also: ajrak, ajrakh print

Ajrakh is a block-printed cloth made in Kutch in Gujarat, in Barmer in Rajasthan and in Sindh in Pakistan. The pattern is usually a closed grid of stars and flowers and small repeating shapes, in deep indigo and madder red with black and white. The cloth goes through many stages: washing, a myrobalan bath, printing of mordants and resists, and repeated dyeing and washing. Both faces are printed so the pattern shows front and back. In Sindh an ajrak is also a large shawl given as an honour. Ajrakh sarees are made today in cotton and in silk.
