Phanek
The wrapped, ankle-length skirt of Meitei women in Manipur, worn with a blouse and a shawl.
Also: phanek mayek naibi, innaphi
The phanek is a length of cloth that a Meitei woman wraps round her waist and tucks at the side, so that it falls to the ankle. It is traditionally woven in stripes or checks. A blouse goes above, and a light shawl, the innaphi, is worn over the shoulders. Phaneks for daily use are often plain or lightly striped. Those for festivals and weddings have woven designs, and the mayek naibi is a well known type with a striped border. The phanek is a regional garment related to the saree rather than a saree drape.
