Margazhi and the Chennai music season

The Tamil month from mid December to mid January, when Chennai holds its Carnatic music and dance season and silk sarees fill the halls.

A swatch drawn for this day, not a photograph.

What is worn for Margazhi and the Chennai music season

Margazhi, the Tamil month from about 15 December to 14 January, is the cool, devotional month of the south, the one in which girls and women draw large kolams at dawn and sing the Tiruppavai, the songs of the poet Andal. In Chennai it is also the season of Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam, when sabhas (concert halls) hold daily morning and evening concerts for weeks. Audiences are known for their dress: older women in silk sarees, often Kanchipuram silk or a cotton saree with a silk border. The dates here are approximate, as the month begins on the day the sun enters Sagittarius.

Also part of it, and being written: Kanchipuram sari (The silk saree most associated with the concert-going crowd.).
