India Day Parade, New York

In mid August New York's Indian community marches up Madison Avenue, with floats, dancers and sarees in the colours of the flag.

What is worn for India Day Parade, New York

The India Day Parade is held in Manhattan on a Sunday in August, close to India's Independence Day on 15 August. It is organised by the Federation of Indian Associations and runs along Madison Avenue, with floats from many states and groups, dancers, bands and community organisations. Marchers wear the clothes of their regions, and many women wear sarees, in the saffron, white and green of the Indian flag, or in the weaves of their home state, such as Banarasi, Kanjivaram, Bandhani and Pochampally ikat. Others wear lehengas, salwar suits and kurtas. Tricolour scarves and badges are widely worn. The date is usually the third Sunday of August, and it changes with the year.
