Dashain in Nepal
Nepal's great festival, with new clothes for all, a red tika from the elders and the saree in red and bright colours.

What is worn for Dashain in Nepal
Dashain is the largest festival of Nepal, lasting about fifteen days from the first day of the bright half of Ashwin, when barley is sown in a pot called jamara, to the full moon. The tenth day, Bijaya Dashami, is the day of the tika, when elders put a mark of rice, curd and vermilion on the forehead of younger family members, and place jamara in their hair. Everyone buys and wears new clothes. Women wear a new saree, often red, or a kurta with a suruwal, and gold, and dress up for family gatherings. Kites are flown, swings are put up in the villages, and goats are sacrificed to the goddess Durga in some families. Dates shown start with the sowing of the jamara and may differ by a day.
